Icons of Biljana Jovanovic are realized as a result of exploration of the complexity of the Christian art, primarily of the Early Christian and Byzantine art as well as those which was created under their direct influence, outside the territory of the Byzantine Empire.
Studying the context and the oldest examples of Christian iconography, preserved not only on icons and frescos, but also on the objects made from ivory, on enamels and on manuscripts of ancient artists, Biljana Jovanovic reveals an inspiring model and example, an appropriate stimulus for a modern iconographer. As a result of this study originated the model of here presented icons and the attitude of the artist-iconographer about the Christian art as an living, creative, authentic, liturgical phenomenon, which takes form and develops from the totality of the Christian theological and art tradition, but is also based on a living and immediate experience of relationship with the Son of God and with His Saints in the context of the liturgical communion of the Church in which an iconographer lives and creates.
According to the paradigm of the ancient iconographers who had been using all sorts of then available fine art techniques, Biljana Jovanovic paints using the most ancient iconographic technique – the encaustics, which were in use during the first ages of Christianity, as well as using the combine technique as one of the most spread technique of own time. |
